Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
I'll never forget what he said in an interview once.

Went something along the lines of:

"If the defender is faster than me, I'll beat him with my strength. If the defender is stronger than me I'll beat him with my pace."

When you watch him play and he takes someone on, you can comfortably believe that he will do one of the above.

Beast.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
I thought he was great yesterday and was a masterstroke by Bilic to play him there as he really stretched Chelsea's defence. They were scared to tackle him. His finishing and decision making let's him down sometimes as feel he should of scored yesterday but overall he was great and did not stop running.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
27th of October and not one of our strikers has scored yet. The fact we are discussing this shows how bad the summers business was.

i'd rather Antonio start than Zaza or Calleri........... or Carroll for that matter!

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
I think Antonio's skill is consistently underestimated. Occasionally, he tries difficult things that don't come off, providing grist to the mill of those that insist he is raw, but mostly they do come off.

Apart from that, he does sometimes look clumsy, but that doesn't hinder his effectiveness.

There are no points for style in this game. He'd make a shit ice-dancer, though.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
I think the appreciation in the stadium for his work when he was subbed showed how well Antonio played.
Was also the one who raced over to the bench to stop Lanzini being subbed as he knew Fernandes had picked up an injury.
Managed to waste about two mins with that on/off substitution too.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
Lard, I disagree with your first sentence. Though Antonio did not score, as has already been pointed out, he did much more to keep Louisa and Terry occupied than Zaza and Calleri would have between them. His efforts were fundamental to our winning in my book.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
He was no better as a striker last night than Zaza or Caleri have been this season.

IMHO he is at his best as an attacking right midfielder. He gets a lot of headed goals not bing picked up by defences worried about Andy Carroll of similar.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
One of the best things about watching live football is you can follow match-ups like Antonio Vs Luis for as long as you want.

It was a great game-within-a-game to watch. Most of the time Luis would slide in and try to take him and the ball out but Antonio was just too strong for him and his superb sense of balance meant he left Luis on his arse more often than not.

Remember, Luis is a fifty million pound player and he had a torrid time last night. Off the ball Luis had hold of Antonio more or less constantly and on one occasion someone dinked a beautiful pass over the Chelsea defence into Antonio's path and neither Luis or Antonio saw the pass as they were too busy wrestling each other and looking in completely the wrong direction.

A telling thing happened when Bilic subbed Antonio off. Luis ran about 20 yards to shake Antonio's hand which was a nice touch- much classier than I'd usually expect from a chelsea player.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
Antonio plays bigger than his size in that he is difficult to knock off the ball when on the move. It's why Terry and Louisa had trouble with him last night and why Bilic played him there.

Like you say, if was great technically he'd be elsewhere, although i think he'g got enough skill in him to not be an issue. He's great at cutting back to send players wrong way, along with Payet and Lanzini, he can beat a man, great to have.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
As it stands with the players we have and the injuries we have Antonio should play up front. He is much better than Zaza and Callieri and Ayew needs to fight his way into the team. I think it should be a straight scrap between Antonio and Ayew with Antonio given his chance first.

I think he's been absolutely shit this season.

Last night was much more like the player we all fell in love with last season.

loved him hassling Sideshow Bob last night, didn't give him a minute's peace, I'd go again with the same team on Sunday. they all deserve to start again

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
I think that his versatility will perhaps be a disadvantage to him, but not the team, in the long run. Jack of all trades and master of none comes to mind. If we were to buy him now he'd easily be double what we paid Forest for him.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
I'm in the minority that doesn't rate him that highly.

I love him, love his attitude and work rate, love his directness and the way he wants to run at defenders.

I just don't think he is particularly that good. Don't get me wrong, what he brings to the team is needed and at present he would be in my starting XI - if he was just technically better and had more quality on the ball.... well then I suppose he wouldn't be playing for us

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
Now that Bilic has found a system that fits our best players into the team I wonder if he will persevere with Antonio up front as that gives Fernandes more chance to start.

Was excellent tonight, gave their centre halfs a nightmare.

We look a different team when teams come at us and we can hit them on the break.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
NO.
He tries his heart out yes, but, a natural ,lethal goalscorer>NO.
However, he has to be better than Zaza,Calleri .
Thank fuck we didn't buy Batshuyai.
He looks a waste of space.
Just where is Oxford?

Trevor B 3:15 Thu Oct 27
Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
I think Ayew might start up top against Everton, or he could easily switch with Antonio during the game to confuse their defenders.

Re: Should Antonio be played as a striker?
He shouldn't. Today was tactical and it worked a treat.

Most mobile player we have and dragged those 3 mugs all over which was obviously the tactic. Genius by Bilic.
